        GEORGE WASHINGTON RICHARDSON

On July 9, 1938- A Mr. Guy Keith of Boston, Mass., wrote a letter concerning
tombstones he had copied as Old Hardfort Cemetery in 1903 or 04. Part of his
letter was the following story:

" I know of one grave that does not appear in these records. I presume it was
not marked at the time they were taken off (copied). It was the grave of "Wash"
(Washington) Richardson. His was the first funeral I ever attended, and the
profound impression it left upon me was never dimmed in the least. I remember
looking into his coffin and seeing large copper coins (the old-time large penny)
placed on his eyes to hold them shut. I wonder if young children should not be
shared such experiences. "Wash" was the only neigbor between our house
and the Lima-Erie Railway. After his death the place was occupied by his son
Bill for many years. As nearly as I can remember , Wash died about 1875. I
hope a suitable stone now marks his grave."

****** George Washington Richardson died the 30th day of January 1879 in
Spencerville, Allen County, Ohio. Was buried In the Old Hartfort
Cemetery.********
